With the current and ongoing loss of jobs and resources (i.e., game-fully-employed family members, education, networks, etc.), the once much-maligned food stamp has become the de facto safety net for struggling families all over the country.
Politically, food stamps have always been a contentious issue: on the one side, they are lambasted as another bloated government handout-- just like giving out cash. On the other, they are integral to the economic stability of food and food security in America.
The New York Times (November 28, 2009) recently reported that "one in eight Americans and one in four children" are now fed using food stamps.
